Always Look on the Bright Side of Life . . .
When giving a eulogy one should never:
* forget the deceased’s name
* mention that the deceased owed them money
* use the phrase “kicked the bucket”
* say the “f” word
* discuss their friend’s plan to stuff a dead ocelot up his own arse later on during the service
John Cleese however, managed to break three of these five rules while giving a eulogy for his great friend Graham Chapman. Chapman, one of the six members of the famed Monty Python group, died on October 4th, 1989 at the age of 48. A service was held for him in the The Great Hall at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in front of his friends and family.
Now I must say, when I “hop the twig, snuff it, cease to be, go to meet the Great Head of Light Entertainment in the Sky, etc…” I want someone like Cleese to give my eulogy. What a fantastically appropriate send-off for such a comedic genious! The icing on the cake (dirt on the coffin?) was when Eric Idol led everyone in “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” at the end of the service.
I think I’ll actually start planning my service now. It’s going to take me quite a while to figure out how to top stuffing a dead ocelot up my funeral goer’s arses. Maybe on entry into my service each mourner will be given a bottle of tequila from which they must take a swig every time they hear the word “funeral”. Knowing my friends and family, they’ll top the dead ocelot within the first half our of the service!
